City and Guilds Awards

The Company actively encouraged the craft of turning in industrial schools from the 1870's through a variety of competitive awards.  In 1950 it was decided to channel these awards in future through the City & Guilds of London Institute, for prowess in Machine Shop Engineering, and Woodcutting Machinists' Work.  The first presentations were made at a special Awards Court at the Apothecaries Hall in January 1953.

In addition to silver and bronze medals and cash prizes, trophies were awarded to the schools and technical colleges attended by the winners.  The Llewelyn Howell Memorial Trophy was presented to the school or college where the first-prize winner in Machine Shop Engineering received training.  The St Catherine's Trophy was presented to the school or college at which the first-prize winner in Woodcutting Machinists' Work received training.

The Loveland Challenge Cup for Work in Metal, and the Loveland Challenge Cup for Work in Wood were presented to the schools or colleges at which the second-prize winners were trained.  More recently, The Wally Barnes Trophy which is in the form of a silver miniature lathe has been presented to the school or college nominated by the Institute.

The Company has awarded prizes for outstanding turning in courses run by colleges for City and Guilds.  Until recently the courses eligible for awards have been those with a turning element which were associated with the production of furniture, notably C & G 6955.  Two awards were made to candidates from C & G 6955 in 2004/2005.

A new series of modules dedicated to turning under the City and Guilds `Creative Occupations’ programme has been introduced at three levels, one through three, and are C & G 7722-29, 7822-14 and 7922-42.  These courses are proving very popular with 104 candidates completing the courses in 2004/2005 and 121 students registered for 2005/2006 at six colleges.  The Howe committee will be reviewing the turning content at the three levels and is assessing their suitability as the basis of turning awards through City and Guilds in the future.
