The competition was for those who had attended any of the Worshipful Company of Turners and AWGB sponsored Youth Training days, and were still 18 years old or younger. On those training days the young people were taught safe turning practice and safe turning enhancement skills. A creative challenge was set by Ray Key with the provision of roughed out Ash bowls. Their approximate size was 20cm x 10cm: they were either rounded or of cone shape. It was hoped that these young people would express themselves creatively and use some of the many techniques they had been exposed to in order to produce a finished item of their own choice from the roughed-out blanks provided. The winner was awarded the AWGB Geoff Cox Youth Trophy, £100 from the Worshipful Company of Turners and a £50 voucher from Rustins. The runner up received £25 from the Worshipful Company of Turners and a one year subscription to “Good Woodworking” presented by Magicalia.
